Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

A non-surgical orthopedic treatment option

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are a minimally invasive orthopedic treatment that uses a patient’s own blood to support the body’s natural healing process. PRP may be considered for certain orthopedic conditions when conservative care has not provided enough relief and before considering surgery.

PRP is offered at BCMH Orthopedic Clinics by experienced orthopedic clinicians.

What Is PRP?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses a concentrated portion of a patient’s own blood that contains platelets and growth factors involved in healing.

Platelets are a component of your blood that play a role in the body’s repair process. During PRP therapy, a small amount of blood is drawn and processed to concentrate the platelets. That concentrated platelet solution is then injected into the affected area to support the body’s natural healing response.

PRP therapy may help reduce pain, improve function, and support healing for certain orthopedic conditions. Results vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated.

How PRP Works

PRP therapy uses a small blood sample to create a concentrated platelet solution that is injected into the treatment area.

From start to finish, PRP treatment typically takes about one hour and is performed in one of our specialty clinic exam rooms.

The process includes:

  • A small blood draw, similar to routine lab work
  • Processing the blood using an FDA-cleared centrifuge device
  • Injection of the concentrated platelets into the affected area

PRP injections at BCMH are prepared using the patient’s own blood and delivered by experienced orthopedic clinicians.

Who Is a Good Candidate for PRP?

PRP can be helpful for some patients, but it is not appropriate for every condition or injury.

A consultation is the first step in determining whether PRP is an appropriate treatment option. During the consultation, your provider will review your condition, imaging, and treatment history to help determine the best course of care.

At BCMH, PRP is offered only for orthopedic conditions. PRP is not provided for cosmetic treatments or hair restoration.

Conditions That May Be Considered for PRP

PRP may be considered for certain orthopedic conditions, including:

  • Sports injuries
  • Tendon, ligament, muscle, and joint injuries
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Jumper’s knee (patellar tendinitis)
  • Selected post-surgical healing needs
  • Osteoarthritis
  • And other select orthopedic conditions

Your provider will determine whether PRP may be appropriate based on your specific diagnosis.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Treatment

Before Treatment

  • Patients must be off NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen or naproxen) and aspirin for 7-10 days prior to treatment.
  • Drink plenty of water starting the day before and leading up to the treatment appointment.

During and After Treatment

  • During and after the injection, patients may experience soreness, swelling, stiffness, or temporary increased pain at the injection site.

After Treatment

  • Avoid NSAIDs and aspirin for 4 weeks after treatment, or as directed by your provider, as they may interfere with healing.
  • Other pain management options may be prescribed if needed.
  • Patients are typically instructed to use rest, ice, compression, and elevation during the post-treatment period.

Recovery and Timeline

Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days, though activity restrictions may be recommended depending on the area treated.

Improvement is often gradual and may take several weeks. Your provider will discuss expected recovery, activity guidelines, and follow-up recommendations specific to your condition.

How Many PRP Treatments Are Needed?

Many patients receive one PRP injection, though some conditions may benefit from additional treatment.

Your provider will determine the recommended treatment plan based on your diagnosis and how you respond to therapy.

Why Consider PRP?

PRP is one option among many orthopedic treatments. It may be recommended when conservative care has not provided enough relief and before considering surgery.

PRP does not replace surgery when surgery is clearly indicated, but it may be an appropriate option for certain orthopedic conditions when used thoughtfully and selectively.

Evidence-Informed Care

PRP has been studied for a range of orthopedic conditions, with evidence suggesting benefit for select patients. Ongoing research continues to refine how and when PRP is most effective.

Cost and Insurance Information

PRP is not typically covered by insurance because it is made from a patient’s own blood and is considered a biologic treatment rather than a drug or implantable device.

Your Cost for PRP

At Bates County Memorial Hospital, PRP therapy is self-pay and payment is due on the date of service prior to treatment.

The cost of PRP therapy can vary depending on the condition being treated and the number of injection sites needed. Some conditions require additional preparation or specialized supplies.

Our orthopedic clinic staff will review your treatment plan and provide your exact cost before you schedule your appointment.

Example pricing:

Muscle or tendon injuries

  • $350 for one injection site
  • $600 for two injection sites

Osteoarthritis

  • $475 for one injection site
  • $800 for two injection sites

Your provider will discuss whether PRP is appropriate for your condition before any treatment is scheduled.

PRP therapy is not eligible for BCMH’s patient financial assistance program.
