Chemotherapy is any treatment involving the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy may consist of single drugs or combinations of drugs, and can be administered through a vein, injected into a body cavity, or delivered orally in the form of a pill. Chemotherapy is different from surgery or radiation therapy because the cancer-fighting drugs circulate in the blood to parts of the body where the cancer may have spread, killing or eliminating cancer cells at sites great distances from the original cancer.

Administration of chemotherapy is available through the hospital’s Outpatient Clinic by a board-certified hematologist/oncologist from Saint Luke’s Cancer Center. The hematologist/oncologist sees patients every Monday at the Bates County Memorial Hospital Outpatient Chemotherapy Clinic.

Registered nurses who have successfully completed a chemotherapy and biotherapy course offered by the Oncology Nurses Society administer the chemotherapy drugs to our patients. Infusion rooms are provided to promote comfort for patients who are receiving their treatments.

The clinic also has three iPads available for patients and family members to use while they are in the clinic having treatment. The iPads were made possible thanks to a donation from the Andrew J. Somora Foundation.
